What Walker Evans Said

“Photography is not cute cats, nor nudes, motherhood or arrangements of manufactured products. Under no circumstances it is anything ever anywhere near a beach.” – Walker Evans

Seems to me that Walker was saying that there are other things to pay attention to. I had an instructor who told us not to bring images of black cats, cemeteries or clouds. He was trying to get us look at the rest of the world. I agree that we need to look much closer to what is around us. The world is not made just of puppies, kittens, sunsets, pretty ladies and naked people. There is so much more we need to see.

Certainly you can shoot whatever you want. However, you may be missing the things that really matter. If you insist on shooting the things mentioned, the chances are you will never rise above the average photo-buff.
