The subjects you choose and the way in which you make an image tell a lot about you as a person. Photography, self-expression, camera
The rule for breaking the rules…… The reason for breaking the rules
Art is one of the disciplines that is free to do what it needs to do. True art is a challenge to reason and common senselessness. Its task is to question the status-quo.
You have a story that you can tell. It is a story waiting for you to express in your own voice and in your own way. It takes time and practice and the right frame of mind. But that is a goal that can lead to seeing and ultimately to understanding.
The inspiration handed to you in a gallery or a book or on the Internet should be one that elevates you as an artist. It should pull you to wanting to make your work as powerful as what you are looking at. It is not about hype or being cool or making stuff up. It is about revealing truths.
It seems to me that nearly everyone has a different opinion of what photography might be, which seems to beg the questions:
The skill of photography is not in adhering to the rules but rather finding favorable ways to break them that allow for new thought, new direction, and a new and meaningful utterance.
Purists will only see what they want to see. But, those with a truly open-mind will look for what the photographer/artist intended.
In order to have your work stand out from the rest you need to have something to say, as well as the ability to see. Technique without vision is of little use to anyone.
